New Blog and Opening

Tennessee State Animal: The raccoon.

I've started a blog called GNOTA, which is an acronym for the Guild of Non-Objective Tennessee Artists. I know the world is over saturated with acronyms, but what's just one more?

The blog is meant to run parallel to an exhibition called "Tennessee Abstract Painting" which is opening at the Cheekwood Museum in Nashville tonight at 6pm. The show will run from March 14 to September 20. There are artists from all three of the "grand divisions" of Tennessee. All dedicated to that wacky and only slightly malinged thing called: Abstract Painting.

Here's the line up:

Ron Buffington, Dwayne Butcher, Hamlett Dobbins, Melissa Dunn, Richard Feaster, Carol Mode, Brady Haston, Rocky Horton, Hans Schmitt-Matzen, Amanda Rogers-Horton, Jared Sprecher, John Tallman, Terry Thacker, Lain York.

Natale Chunks

Some chunks from Nancy Natale. Check out her art in the studio blog. She writes...
"Here are some color chunks that I found walking around my little city in western Mass. It's Easthampton (pop. 16,000), next door to Northampton and not far from Amherst. I was out walking around Easthampton with my camera because I am participating in the weather photos blog (http://blog.weatherphotos.org/) and was looking for some shots."

SEND IN YOUR COLOR CHUNKS

1. Must be jpg. form.
2. Must not be your artwork, but 'source material' is okay.
3. Must not be somebody else's artwork(including design).
4. Must not be somebody's photo where they try to make it art.
5. Nothing from fckr(see above), unless taken yourself.

Basically, "Chunks" is an alternative to the word "Piece" in mindset and philosophy. As in..."I created this particular 'piece' during my 'Summer in Tuscany Period'. There is an artlessness to Chunks, a spontaneity, a happy accident, a stumble upon quality. Frequently, the more ambiguous the image or object, the better. Color is what is known and where you can hang the meaning. The Color asserts itself to the point of distraction.

Rohr Chunks

These come from Kristin Rohr and were taken in Sulawesi.
She is an artist and a scientist. Here is her website.
I love the orange jumpsuits and have been attracted to the
same phenomenon. In our culture the sporting of the
ornage jumpsuit takes on penal implications.

The Form of Crimes

"So you find something ridiculous in the form itself?" Stravogin insisted.

"And in the substance. The ugliness of it will kill it," Tikhon said in a whisper, looking down.

"Ugliness! What ugliness?"

"Of the crime. There are ugly crimes. Crimes, whatever they be, the more blood, the more horror in them, the more imposing they are, so to say, more picturesque. But there are crimes shameful, disgraceful, past all horror, they are, so to say, almost too inelegant..."

From the Possessed, F. Dostoevsky.
