Without having seen this film, I assume the red is metaphorical or symbolic. Anyway, now I'm compelled to see it.
Stephanie, be careful, I saw this film once twenty years ago and I'm still troubled by it. A very painful and difficult exploration of existential angst from what I remember; I don't think I could sit through it again.
